Beverley Mantovani was born in South Africa and commenced her dance training at a very early age. She studied Royal Academy of Dance ballet, modern dance and the Spanish Dance Society Syllabus, honing her skills in all of these dance forms and graduating from the National School of the Arts in Johannesburg. She then studied in Spain to further her knowledge of Spanish and flamenco dance, which by then had become her passion.
Distinguished Dance Career in South Africa & Abroad
In 1976 Beverley was invited to join the Luisa Cortes Spanish Dance Theatre as
a principal dancer. She was awarded the Mercedes Molina Bursary after which she joined the Mercedes Molina Dance Company and performed professionally throughout South Africa and abroad.
Beverley performed in television productions of Blood Wedding, Don
Juan, Artes Awards and Misa Flamenco on South African National television.
Dance Professor & Choreographer in South Africa & Canada
After receiving Instructor de Baile and Profesor de Baile teaching diplomas, in 1981 Beverley opened her own school of dance in South Africa. Recognized as a highly qualified teacher, she taught and performed with her students varying styles of dance for some 20 years – Royal Academy of Dance ballet, South African Dance Teachers Association modern dance, and the Spanish Dance Society Syllabus. In 1991, she started her own professional company – Los Gitanos. For a further 10 years, she performed and choreographed works for the company.
Flamenco Dance Classes - Richmond, Delta, Vancouver
Fortunately for students in Delta, Richmond and Vancouver, in 2001, Beverley and her family decided to come to Canada, and it was here in Delta that she again began to teach and opened up her own Spanish dance school – Los Gitanos School of Spanish & Flamenco Dance. This has proved to be a successful venture. Beverley is the founder of the Spanish Dance Society in Canada and holds annual examinations by international Spanish Dance Society examiners.
Active and Honoured in Delta & Tsawwassen
Beverley has been a very active member in our community and was a finalist in the Delta Chamber of Commerce Hats Off to Excellence Awards in 2008, 2010 and 2013. She received the Mentor of the Arts Award for 2010. Every year she produces, choreographs and dances in her Los Gitanos Flamenco Tablao, a show of high standards performed locally at the Tsawwassen Arts Centre.
